I’ve lived my life in such secrecy that I’ve spent most of it lonely. Life was simpler when it was just me accidentally blowing myself up while trying to create potions and shampoo. I really don’t know how this stuff keeps happening to me. That’s when a girl has to stop, look around, and question her life choices. What’s it like when that crazed vampire tells you he wants you to be the happy little intermission, during an ongoing ancient story, and expects you to use your vagina to draw in a werewolf alpha, a Van Helsing alpha, and a sexual deviant alpha, so he can have his old friends back? What’s it like to accidentally raise psychotic alpha vampire everyone fears, who drops a lot of bodies on his first day out as a ‘gift’ for your troubles? What’s it like to be the girl who can’t die…that everyone seems to always want to kill? What’s it like to be a monster in a town full of monsters, who don’t know you’re a monster?Ĭomplicated and a little scary, but doable. ![]()

In fact, it just kept on getting better and better and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’m delighted to say, on my second attempt, I found this novel to be a total winner. I had just finished reading Hugh Thomas’s excellent book, “Conquest”, and had developed a more than passing interest in the Aztec civilization. However, after four years in Mexico and a recent visit to Mexico City I decided to pick it up again. There were just too many sentences like the following: The young man, about my own age, took only a single step inside and said, ‘The Tecútli Tlauquécholtzin, my master and yours, requires the presence of your son Chicóme-Xochitl Tliléctic-Mixtli at the palace.’ Not the easiest stuff to wrestle with when you’re in the mood for a comfy read. ![]() Also, the world that Jennings was describing was a bit too alien and the names of people were rather unpronounceable. ![]() ![]() It’s a formidable 1,038 pages in length and, at the time, I just didn’t feel I could go the distance. I started to read this book several years ago, before coming to Mexico, and didn’t get very far into it. ![]() ![]() Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. I figured this was a perfect way to discover new fiction and make new literary friends while also overanalyzing stories (which is one of my favorite things). But since I’m writing fiction now, I clearly need to read more of it. I also regularly act in Shakespeare plays, although I’m not sure how much that counts towards reading. If I DO read a fiction book, it’s probably a Tamora Pierce novel or historical fiction set around the English Renaissance (Tudor Times are MY JAM), or maybe Jane Austen. ![]() I generally gravitate toward nonfiction books, usually history or self help.
